Valentine’s Day in Vermont. It’s winter. There’s snow. And there are ski resorts.
So what’s a couple that skis to do? Go skiing together for the day. Of course.
Some of the resorts have great deals for Valentine’s Day. Mad River Glen offers $14 lift tickets, though you do have to kiss in the ticket booth. Seriously. Sugarbush Resort also offers the same $14 deal, though no kissing is involved.
We were planning to go to Mad River Glen, but there hadn’t been a ton of snow; MRG doesn’t have much in the way of snowmaking, so we we decided to go to Sugarbush instead.
I’ll be honest. I’m not a big skier. It’s cold out there, the gear is way too clunky for my taste, some body part always hurts, and my legs get sore quickly.
However, I do see skiing as good cross-training, and I love being in nature. So I grin and bear it and try not to complain too much. (Just ask Josh how much complaining I did walking through the parking lot. Ha.) Also, living in Vermont, how could I not ski at least once this winter?
Josh has been skiing at Sugarbush all season, so I was excited to have him show me around the trails he’s talked about so much. My absolute favorite trail of the day was Sleeper. It’s a blue trail that made me truly feel like I was in the woods. There’s just an indescribable feeling to ski down a trail feeling completely surrounded by nature, hearing nothing but quiet, and looking around to see the mountains. Love that. (Though my legs were aching by then – running definitely uses different leg muscles than skiing.)
Oh, and just for fun, here are some cheesy photos taken by Black Diamond Photo, who was taking pictures of the couples skiing. Our first (unofficial) engagement photos! (Photos courtesy of Black Diamond Photo.)
My goal is to get in at least one more day of skiing in this season, at Mad River Glen. I can’t miss out on skiing at a resort whose slogan is “ski it if you can”. Makes me curious. Very curious.
